Third-party marketing scripts (Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, Hotjar, Google Analytics 4) are the primary culprits behind degraded Core Web Vitals. Even on well-optimized static websites, executing 400KB of vendor tracking code directly on the browser’s main thread causes CPU jank, delays Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), and spikes Interaction to Next Paint (INP).
When building high-performance editorial platforms and e-commerce websites with Astro, we needed a way to satisfy marketing telemetry requirements without surrendering our 100/100 Lighthouse Performance rating.
The solution: Partytown.
1. How Partytown Works Under the Hood
Standard browser scripts run directly on the single-threaded UI thread:

Partytown relocates third-party scripts into a dedicated Web Worker. When the tracking script attempts to access DOM APIs (like document.cookie, window.location, or document.createElement), Partytown intercepts these calls via JavaScript Proxies and synchronizes them with the main thread using synchronous XMLHttpRequest or Atomics:

The browser’s main thread remains completely unblocked, resulting in Total Blocking Time (TBT) = 0ms.
2. Astro Configuration
Astro provides official integration support for Partytown via @astrojs/partytown.
In astro.config.mjs:

The forward array is critical: it informs Partytown which global functions called on the main thread (like dataLayer.push()) must be proxied directly into the Web Worker execution context.
3. Script Declarations in Astro Components
To delegate any script to Partytown, simply assign type="text/partytown" to the <script> tag:

4. Proxied Reverse Proxy for CORS Bypassing
Because Web Workers enforce strict Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) rules on fetch() and XMLHttpRequest, tracking scripts originating from www.googletagmanager.com or connect.facebook.net must be proxied through the same origin.
On Cloudflare Pages or Cloudflare Workers, configure a lightweight redirect rule in _redirects or a Worker proxy:
